In order to help the public better understand sex crimes and child abuse, the Washington County Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) has compiled these pages to provide the Vermont press with easy access to data relating to these crimes in OUR Community.

The Vermont news media has adopted a policy to not disclose sex crime victims' identities. While this is certainly better than the alternative, OUR House would suggest that the media adopt a policy to protect victims' identities from disclosure. Victims are unwilling to report sex crimes for a variety of reasons, including their fear of public knowledge. We, as a community, need to do everything we can to support victims' willingness to reach out for protection and support. If our news media were to take a "proactive" approach to protecting victims' identities, we will eliminate one of the reasons these crimes go unreported.

It is our hope that this information can provide substantive and relevant material that will help members of OUR Community better understand the impact these crimes have. Please feel free to utilize the information in this section without attribution (although, citing OUR House as a source certainly won't disappoint us!).

While every effort has been made to assure the information contained in this section is accurate and timely, we recommend that the information be verified with independent sources.
